The NetWorker usage report for 2016 is now complete and available here. Per previous years surveys, the survey ran from December 1, 2016 through to January 1, 2017.

Survey

There were some interesting statistics and trends arising from this survey. The percentages of businesses not using backup to disk in at least some form within their environment fell to just 1% of respondents. That’s 99% of respondents having some form of backup to disk within their environment!

More and more respondents are cloning within their environments – if you’re not cloning in yours, you’re falling behind the curve now in terms of ensuring your backup environment can’t be a single point of failure.

There’s plenty of other results and details in the survey report you may be interested in, including:

  • Changes to the number of respondents using dedicated backup administrators
  • Cloud adoption rates
  • Ransomware attacks
  • The likelihood of businesses using or planning to use object storage as part of their backup environment
  • and many more

You can download the survey from the link above.

Just a reminder: “Data Protection: Ensuring Data Availability” is out now, and you can buy it in both paperback and electronic format from Amazon, or in paperback from the publisher, CRC Press. If you’ve enjoyed or found my blog useful, I’m sure you’ll find value in my latest book, too!

One respondent from this year’s survey will be receiving a signed copy of the book directly from me, too! That winner has been contacted.

The NetWorker usage survey for 2015 saw 140 respondents across all geographic regions, and provided some excellent details on continuing trends, as well as picking up on some new correlations – such as the likelihood of using deduplication when compared to the overall number of clients being protected.

Here’s an example of one of the trends we’re seeing: the platform of choice for the NetWorker server. This year Windows and Linux are practically neck and neck – which platform will be the dominant server platform this year? We’ll find out at the end of the year!

I’m pleased to say I’ve completed and made available the NetWorker usage report for 2014. I’m particularly grateful to everyone who took the time to answer the 20 questions in the survey conducted between December 1, 2014 and January 31, 2015.

The report continues to track trends in NetWorker usage within organisations: deduplication adoption continues to grow, for instance, and Data Domain remains the overwhelmingly preferred method to enable that deduplication.

This was the first survey that asked a basic question I should have been asking for the last several years (!), how big is a full backup for your environment? The results on that question were particularly insightful as to just how large some environments get, and put to rest that FUD you see occasionally from other vendors that NetWorker doesn’t cut the mustard. (It not only cuts it, but it spreads it in an entirely appetising way…)

You can find on the main NetWorker Hub site, or access it directly here.

Thanks to everyone who provided responses into the recovery survey. It proved to be a very interesting insight into some of the recovery profiles businesses experience. It confirmed some generally held views about recovery, but it also highlighted some differences. For example, consider the results for recovery frequencies:

With apologies for the delays, I’m pleased to announce that the report following the NetWorker Usage Survey in June/July 2011 is now ready.

With two prior reports, some comparison for trending was possible, and this will continue in future reports. Some interesting results were noticed in the backup cloning section, and new questions were posed to track encryption usage within environments.

The report is available here.

From around mid-November through to the start of December, our second NetWorker usage survey was run. Do you think NetWorker is an enterprise product, or a workgroup product? If you’re thinking workgroup, the survey results should correct you on that. Let’s take a look for instance at the number of clients that NetWorker sites are protecting:

Number of clients protected by NetWorkerThat’s over 50% of NetWorker deployments being used to protect sites with more than 250 clients – clearly entrenching it in the datacentre.

For the full report, go to the Reports section on nsrd.info and retrieve the first listed report – “NetWorker Usage Survey, November 2010”. (No registration required.)

The first NetWorker Usage Survey for the NetWorker Information Hub ran between March 11 2010 and March 20 2010. During that time there were 211 respondents to the survey, and the results of the survey are now available.

The survey focused on three primary components:

  • Versions of NetWorker currently in use.
  • Host information (number of clients, operating systems, etc.)
  • Licensed features, specifically focusing on modules and core options.

Several lessons were learned in this survey, and based on the excellent responses received, I’m looking forward to conducting more.
