This is an appeal for information.
I’ve heard conflicting stories and I can’t get rock solid clarification from any party. Despite Oracle initially announcing that Sun would continue to OEM NetWorker from EMC, I’ve subsequently been told by several Sun OEM customers that this has been recently abandoned. Since I’ve heard of Sun (under Oracle) dropping other contracts, it’s left me quite curious as to what the heck is going on.
If someone can give me a definitive answer, I’d appreciate it.
I want to make it plain – I’m not rumour mongering, just trying to get to the bottom of rumours.
I’m sorry I can’t help you with a definitive answer, but one thing Im having problems with is the Service Packs for EBS; apparently, they are not published for EBS anymore.. I needed EBS 7.5 SP2 for a customer, doesn’t exist. Maybe they’ve encountered a hefty performance bug in grep or sed, but personally I believe Oracle doesn’t want to put any effort in it.
Hi Alex,
I think that in itself is a somewhat definitive answer; if Oracle is unwilling to provide new service packs for EBS, the writing seems to be on the wall for the OEM version.
Cheers,
Preston.
OK, just checked to make sure:
7.4 SP5, 7.5SP1, and 7.6 are the only downloads available on the Sun site.
Considering EMCNW 7.5 is on SP3, I’m not suspecting any updates will be released very soon then, if at all.
I was told by a Sun service tech back in May that they were EOLing EBS, with a last sale date of June 14, 2010, and transitioning customers to EMC. The local reseller that we buy support from confirmed this when I asked in June. I still haven’t been able to find any public announcement, though.
I’d heard the same thing from Sun / Oracle re the EOL of EBS.
Actually, I have heard internally from EMC that Oracle will stop OEM Sun EBS. Timing is uncertain though.
Would love to get official paperwork stating so though….
(already sent this nearline to Preston)
I have official confirmation that EBS is EOL. EMC is already running an license exchange program, and _apparently_ Oracle already made an official statement somewhere in June. Love to see that, though, because none of us technically involved was ‘in the know’.
OK, now this is terrific:
http://www.oracle.com/us/products/servers-storage/storage/previous-products/index.html
Here you can see the official EOL list, which includes STK Enterprise Backup Server. It’s not stamped with an official date, though in the source you’ll find
Date: 23rd Mar 2010
Now look at this, only a few weeks before an official statement:

Hi Alex,
We saw that 7.5.2 was not available but Sun/Oracle supplied us with the copy after raising a call about this. We currently run EBS 7.5.2 on Solaris.
