{"id":10029,"date":"2021-03-01T07:53:50","date_gmt":"2021-02-28T21:53:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/nsrd.info\/blog\/?p=10029"},"modified":"2021-03-01T07:53:53","modified_gmt":"2021-02-28T21:53:53","slug":"powerprotect-data-manager-filesystem-agent-installation-and-recovery","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nsrd.info\/blog\/2021\/03\/01\/powerprotect-data-manager-filesystem-agent-installation-and-recovery\/","title":{"rendered":"PowerProtect Data Manager Filesystem Agent \u2013\u00a0Installation and Recovery"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Introduction<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>While PowerProtect Data Manager supports some important functions, like highly efficient VMware and database backups, we shouldn&#8217;t lose sight of the basics, either \u2013&nbsp;like traditional filesystem backup operations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this this post I&#8217;ll take you through installation of the standard filesystem agent (not the block-based backup version), policy configuration, and recovery from a backup.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Note: I&#8217;d previously done a video demo of this functionality, but I wanted to do a step-by-step walk-through this time to provide the screen-grabbed steps. You can find the video option in the related posts section at the end of this article.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Filesystem Agent Engine Activation<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Data Manager uses one or more protection <em>engines<\/em>, which relate to types of assets that you can run services for. You&#8217;ll get a &#8220;Howto&#8221; cheat sheet to review:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/nsrd.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Asset_Source_03.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1149\" height=\"511\" src=\"https:\/\/nsrd.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Asset_Source_03.jpg\" alt=\"File System Asset Source Cheat Sheet\" class=\"wp-image-10033\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nsrd.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Asset_Source_03.jpg 1149w, https:\/\/nsrd.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Asset_Source_03-300x133.jpg 300w, https:\/\/nsrd.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Asset_Source_03-1024x455.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/nsrd.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Asset_Source_03-768x342.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1149px) 100vw, 1149px\" \/><\/a><figcaption>File System Asset Source Cheat Sheet<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The cheat sheet tells you that you can now add filesystem asset sources by:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Downloading and installing the agent<\/li><li>Approving the agent registration<\/li><li>Confirming the assets appear<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Once you can see the assets, you can add them to an existing policy, or create a new protection policy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Filesystem Agent Installation<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>OK, so having activated the protection engine for filesystem backups, the next step would be to download, install and register a filesystem client.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For this test, I took advantage of the recent changes to the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/developers.redhat.com\/articles\/faq-changes-red-hat-developer-programs-no-cost-subscriptions\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">RedHat Developer network<\/a><\/strong>, allowing you to install RHEL on up to 16 non-production systems. I downloaded RHEL 8.3 and installed a new virtual machine with the following specs:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>1 x CPU<\/li><li>2 GB RAM<\/li><li>16 GB Root Disk (thinly provisioned)<\/li><li>8 GB Data Disk (thinly provisioned), mounted at \/DATA and formatted XFS.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>I named the virtual machine <strong>totesrhelly<\/strong>, added it to my developer subscription, ran patching on it, and copied some PDFs across to it for backup and recovery testing. (Because it&#8217;s in my lab environment, I disabled the firewall and turned SELinux off.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The next step was to download the filesystem agent. You can download these from the Dell EMC support site, or you can go to the <strong>Settings menu<\/strong> (Gear Icon) in Data Manager and click <strong>Agent Downloads<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure <em>&#8211;skip-driver<\/em> option to turn off installation of the block-based backup driver:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a you&#8217;re prompted whether you want to register the agent with a Data Manager server. But because this was the first filesystem agent I&#8217;d installed\/configured on this Data Manager server, a new policy was required.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once you click the <strong>Add<\/strong> button, Data Manager starts the new policy wizard to lead you through the process. Anyone who reads my blogs regularly knows what a fan I am of logs, so of course I clicked that checkbox immediately, before clicking <strong>Next<\/strong> to continue. I&#8217;ve just shown it at the end.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Running a Filesystem Agent Recovery<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>I&#8217;d created my policy at 13:30 and had some time to kill, so I went and did a <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/powerplate.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">PowerPlate<\/a><\/strong> session before returning to my Data Manager console around 14:05 to see the backup job complete. It was now time to start the recovery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In Data Manager, you start a recovery by navigating to <strong>Recovery &gt; Assets<\/strong> and choosing the asset type you want to recover from. For me, that was <strong>Recovery &gt; Assets &gt; File System<\/strong>.
