No backup system"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In the past I&#8217;ve talked about the importance of having zero error policies.<\/p>\n<p>In &#8220;<a title=\"What is a zero error policy?\" href=\"https:\/\/nsrd.info\/blog\/2009\/08\/11\/what-is-a-zero-error-policy\/\" target=\"_blank\">What is a zero error policy?<\/a>&#8220;, I said:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Having a zero error policy requires the following three rules:<\/p>\n<p>1. All errors shall be known.<\/p>\n<p>2. All errors shall be resolved.<\/p>\n<p>3. No error shall be allowed to continue to occur indefinitely.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>If you&#8217;ve not read that article, I suggest you go read it, as well as the follow-up article, &#8220;<a title=\"Zero error policy management\" href=\"https:\/\/nsrd.info\/blog\/2009\/08\/25\/zero-error-policy-management\/\" target=\"_blank\">Zero error policy management<\/a>&#8220;.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m going to make, and stand by, with fervid determination, the following assertion:<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>If you do not have a zero-error policy for your backups, you do not have a valid backup system.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>No<\/em> ifs, <em>no<\/em> buts, <em>no<\/em> maybes, <em>no<\/em> exceptions.<\/p>\n<p>Why? <em>Because<\/em> why. Because across all the sites I&#8217;ve seen, regardless of size, regardless of complexity, the only ones that actually <em>work<\/em> properly are those where every error is captured, identified, and dealt with. Only those sites would I point at and say &#8220;They have every chance of meeting their SLAs&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Enterprise Systems Backup and Recovery: A corporate insurance policy\" href=\"http:\/\/www.enterprisesystemsbackup.com\" target=\"_blank\">In my book<\/a>, I introduce the notion that just deploying software and thinking you have a backup system is like making a sacrifice to a volcano.
