{"id":492,"date":"2009-05-29T20:10:56","date_gmt":"2009-05-29T10:10:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/nsrd.wordpress.com\/?p=492"},"modified":"2009-05-29T20:10:56","modified_gmt":"2009-05-29T10:10:56","slug":"should-you-use-nas-for-disk-backup","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nsrd.info\/blog\/2009\/05\/29\/should-you-use-nas-for-disk-backup\/","title":{"rendered":"Should you use NAS for disk backup?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Over at SearchStorage, there&#8217;s an article at the moment <a title=\"Search Storage\" href=\"http:\/\/searchstorage.techtarget.com.au\/articles\/32379-Should-you-use-NAS-as-the-target-for-disk-backup-and-recovery-\" target=\"_blank\">about using NAS disk as a disk backup target<\/a> \u2013 i.e., where (in NetWorker), the ADV_FILE device would be created.<\/p>\n<p>I have to say, I strongly disagree with the notion of using NAS mounted filesystems for disk backup, <em>even if NetWorker lets you<\/em>. In short, it&#8217;s a very bad idea, and primarily for performance reasons.<\/p>\n<p>Consider this \u2013 the optimal backup configuration for NAS is to use NDMP wherever possible; otherwise, if we backup the volume(s) as they are mounted on another host, every backup involves a double network transfer \u2013 once to retrieve the data from the NAS device to the mounter, and then a second transfer to have the backup product copy the data from the mounter to backup storage.<\/p>\n<p>So, let me ask the obvious question \u2013 if performance issues act as a primary reason to <em>not<\/em> backup NAS via mounts, are there any compelling performance reasons why the reverse would be acceptable?<\/p>\n<p>I don&#8217;t believe there are.
