Avamar 19.7 has been released recently, and I’ll run through some of the key enhancements in it. For more details, documentation and downloads, be sure to head over to the official Avamar support page.
We start with the Avamar Web-based UI, AUI. This continues to solidify functionality, making it the interface you’ll want to use for day to day administration. In 19.7, AUI adds support for:
- Running on-demand backups for Solaris Filesystem, AIX Filesystem, macOS Filesystem, Windows VSS, Solaris SAP on Oracle and Solaris Oracle RMAN.
- Creating and configuring OpenLDAP directory integration.
- Creating and managing system and custom event profiles.
- Providing software update notifications.
- Using MFA and CAC authentication.
Avamar Virtual Edition (AVE) adds support for running in VMware 7.0.
There have been a number of updates for the VMware image-based proxy solution as well. These include:
- Proxy status and alert notifications are more seamlessly provided; these will let you know if deployed proxies are having network or service issues.
- File Level Recovery (FLR) from image-based backups is now supported for GPT partitions in RedHat, SUSE and Ubuntu Linux virtual machines.
- The proxy deployment manager can now deploy proxies in thinly provisioned mode for you.
While I’m talking about VMware, there are now options to establish FETB quota limits within each VMware image-based backup policy — handy if your VMware environment tends to have sudden growth spurts, particularly in non-production systems where you want to manage the backup limits more closely.
Under the hood, Avamar 19.7 also upgrades the OS used by AVE and physical Avamar systems to SLES 12 SP5, to include all the latest and greatest OS changes on that front.
You can upgrade to 19.7 from Avamar versions 7.5.1 and higher.
