Basics – Avamar and Microsoft SQL Server Recoveries

I’ve had a need in the last few days to run up some tests using Avamar to recover SQL Server databases. And so I figured with the lab environment configured, it’s a good opportunity to record some demos.

I’ll cover off the standard database recoveries later, since I’ve spent all weekend working and ran out of steam. But, I do have two special case recoveries that I think are worthwhile seeing in action.

SQL Server Table-Level Recoveries

In the video below, I step through the process of recovering a single database table from Microsoft SQL Server. This is a really useful technique in Avamar, and too easily forgotten about.

SQL Server Database Flat File Recoveries

Normally when you’re recovering SQL Server databases in Avamar, you’ll recover them as a database into an active SQL Server. But sometimes it’s useful to recover them first as flat backup files that SQL Server can read. That way, you can do pre-processing, or copy them somewhere else entirely.

In the video below, I show you how that process works.

Before You Go…

Thanks for checking out the videos. Before you go, don’t forget that the second edition of Data Protection: Ensuring Data Availability has a plethora of information about running a data protection environment. Not just the technology either – processes, operational considerations and best practices all appear in the book. (And if you’d prefer an electronic copy, it’s now available in the Apple Book store, too!)
