Keeping Cloud Data Protection Costs Low

The NIST Cloud Computing framework defines the following essential characteristics of cloud computing:

  • On-demand self-service
  • Broad network access
  • Resource pooling
  • Rapid elasticity
  • Measured service.

These are all pretty cool things, but one thing I’ve also noticed is that after a while most businesses stop thinking about these as a primary consideration for operations in the cloud. Instead, the key consideration ends up being cost with there being two key questions:

  • How much will this cost me to spin up?
  • How much will this cost me each month?

Every conversation with customers about operations in the public cloud always come down to cost.

And that’s why the latest ESG analysis comparing PowerProtect Data Manager with Data Domain Virtual Edition shows you’re on a cost winner with it compared to products from other vendors. To quote:

ESG compared a deployment of the Dell Technologies solution to four top competitors in Amazon Web Services (AWS), Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud Platform (GCP) to validate its cost advantages. A reduction of cost of more than 80% was confirmed during ESGs analysis of multiple modeled scenarios.

Understanding the Economics of In-cloud Data Protection: A Dell Technologies Data Protection Solution Designed with
Cost Optimization in Mind

This is quite a comprehensive analysis. It looks at a comparison between Data Manager+DDVE running in AWS, Azure and GCP against four other vendors for a variety of FETB protection sizes, ranging from 10 to 500 TB.

I’m not going to steal the thunder from the report, so I’ll provide two links below with a strong recommendation to review them. If you are running workloads in the public cloud, you might have gone to the cloud for a variety of reasons, but now you’re there, cost is king. And this report gives you the details you need to know.
